This is a lovely Mangano Calcite specimen crystal in completely natural rough form. Calcite is a common mineral found all over the world. Mangano Calcite is famously mined in Peru, Mexico, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Madagascar and a few other locations around the world.
This lovely specimen originated in Slovakia.
What is Mangano Calcite?
Calcite itself is one of the most varied and common minerals on earth. It is a form of Calcium Carbonate and occurs in a wide variety of colours. Calcite will often display a variety of fluorescing characteristics. These are fluorescence, phosphorescence, thermoluminescence, and even triboluminescence. Mangano or Manganoan Calcite is different from Pink Calcite. Mangano Calcite has to contain 30% Manganese Carbonate which imparts it delicate pink colouration. As this is a rarer form of Calcite pink calcite and dyed material is sometimes passed off as the rarer Mangano form.
This mineral was discovered in the Slovak Republic by A Breithaupt in 1846. Most calcites form in limestone environments where metamorphic pressures create marble and cause the calcites to crystallise. In this case they tend to crystallise in trigonal formations. Mangano Calcite can be purely pink but is often banded with different shades of pink and often includes white calcite banding as well.
