Description
Where does this Tektite originate?
All tektites are created by the impact of an extra-terrestrial object with the earth. Consequently, tektites can be found wherever this has happened across the earth.
This Tektite originates from Indonesia.
What is a Tektite?
All tektites are created by a meteorite impact with the earth. As the meteorite travels through the atmosphere, it heats and builds up kinetic energy. On impact all this energy is converted into heat and any silicates in the ground minerals or meteorite can form into a glass on impact. Perhaps the most famous tektite on the market is Moldavite which was all created at an impact site in the Czech Republic. This is an unusual green colour and has been prized for centuries. More commonly tektites form as a black coloured glass. They are not a true crystal in the geological sense. Obsidian is also a naturally formed glass but created by volcanic heat rather than the heat from an impact with earth.
What are the myths and legends associated with Tektites?
Darwin was the first scientist to formally identify an Australasian tektite in the 19th century. He recorded his findings in his book his 1844 book ‘Geological Observations on the Volcanic Islands visited during the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle’.
the name ‘tektite’ is from the Greek word for ‘molten’ and was attributed to this classification of objects by Eduard Seuss 1867- 1941.
Given that tektites are relatively recently identified and understood there are no specific legends or myths associated with them.
