Rhodochrosite is the National Stone of Argentina which is where most of the material is found. Deposits run along the Pacific coastline and into Chile, Peru, Mexico and USA. Some deposits have been found in South Africa.
This specimen is Argentinian.
What is Rhodochrosite?
Rhodochrosite is a Manganese Carbonate mineral which is rarely found in economically viable deposits. It can form in cracks and crevices within metamorphic or sedimentary rock. It is quite often found in silver mines within stalactite formations. Rising hydrothermal solutions crystallizing in layers result in the stunning rose-coloured banding which characterise this mineral. True crystal forms are exceptionally rare and therefore very valuable for collectors.
Typically Rhodochrosite is in the red to pink range but can occur in orange through to brown colourations.
Rhodochrosite is a relatively rare and therefore valuable mineral. Care has to be taken when buying Rhodochrosite as it is commonly faked, especially in bead or Cabouchon form.

The Incas called Rhodochrosite ‘The Inca Stone’ or ‘Inca Rose’ because they believed it was created out of the blood of their Kings and Queens. Its discovery is attributed to the pre-Columbian Inca ruler Viracocha. Archaeologists have found Rhodochrosite artifacts in ancient burial sites. This association with the Incan Royal line led them to believe that it was a good stone to work with to resolve inner conflict, past life trauma and to try and find balance and personal grace.
In 2002 it became the state mineral for Colorado because of the Sweet Home Mine in Alma produces some of the rarest and best examples of the crystal form of Rhodochrosite.
