Where does this Mookaite Specimen originate?
All Mookaite originates from one area of Western Australia around the ‘Mooka’ Creek. This is an Aboriginal local name which literally means ‘Running water’.

What is Mookaite?
Mookaite is a form of Jasper which has formed from the skeletal remains of Radiolaria which are a microscopic protozoon with a hard silica shell. Dating from the Cretaceous Period these layers of protozoa deposited in sedimentary layers in shallow ocean beds have fossilized and combined with other minerals carried in groundwater as sea levels rose and fell of the millennia. These other silica’s and minerals are the reason every piece of Mookaite is so different. Some are more chert, opalite or chalcedony and the variety of colouration is astonishing from yellow, cream, beige through to reds and even purple.
More rarely Mookaite can have black dendritic inclusions. The mineral is quite hard to mine with high levels of wastage as it can be very crumbly and break down during the excavation process. Mookaite also lies under layers of old Creek beds comprising Radiolarian Clay which is particularly difficult to get through.
