Where does this Lapis Lazuli Specimen originate?
Lapis Lazuli has been found in Afghanistan and Pakistan for thousands of years and this is still the main source of Lapis Lazuli. A high quality form of the material has been more recently discovered in Argentina and some deposits also are known in Peru, USA and Russia.

What is Lapis Lazuli?
Lapis Lazuli is a sodium aluminum silicate-rich mineral. It is combined with other minerals in the metamorphic rock that it forms within. Lazurite is always present but often calcite, pyrite, mica, afghanite and sodalite will also be present. It forms where deposits of Limestone or Marble are altered due to contact or hydrothermal metamorphism. Lazurite will form within the host rock or band within different layers. Lapis must contain a minimum of 25% Lazurite to be considered Lapis Lazuli.
Lapis Lazuli is often faked because of its high value. Agates can be died and are sometimes passed off as Lapis, some fakes are made from plastic or glass. You also need to take care that your Lapis is not dyed low grade material to give the impression of a more expensive quality than it actually is. The plastics feel warm to the touch and the agates and other materials will lack the gold looking pyrite inclusions. Look carefully for any signs of dye. Acetate would reveal any dye.

In Egyptian tradition it was a Royal Stone famously used in the death mask of Tutankhamun. Cleopatra used powdered Lapis as eye shadow. Indeed, it was considered to be a powerful agent to improve sight.
Lapis Lazuli found its way into Europe in Medieval times as items of jewellery and as a valuable pigment. Ultramarine paint was made from powdered Lapis. This was the blue pigment used by Michael Angelo during the Renaissance.
