What is Garnet?
Garnet is a term for quite a large category of rock forming minerals. These minerals share a common crystal form and a basic chemical composition although a wide range of different minerals can substitute for one another within the specific crystal form. Garnet is formed where sedimentary rocks come under metamorphic pressure. Typically, this is at plate boundaries. Garnet can therefore be found in the metamorphic rocks themselves or in soils and sedimentary layers where eroded garnet has been deposited.
The garnets grow under the metamorphic pressure and often are heavily included as they incorporate other minerals in the immediate vicinity. Garnets are often red brown but can be a range of other colourations including green. Garnets have been used by man for millennia and aside from decorative gemstones they have a variety of modern industrial uses as well.
