Where does this Epidote Crystal Cluster originate?
Epidote is a common crystal found globally. However only a few places produce really stunning crystal forms of Epidote. The best examples are from Austria, Brazil, Norway, Pakistan, North America and Peru. This particular example is a lovely specimen from Austria. It is attributed to discovery by R J Huay in 1801 who was the first to describe it.
What is Epidote?
Epidote is a secondary mineral formed from changes to metamorphic rock or hydrothermal alteration to a variety of igneous rocks. Epidote is an aluminium-iron material that can be in stone or crystal form. It crystallises in prismatic and striated clusters as we see so well in this specimen. Colouration can vary from black through the green to green-yellow spectrum and it is often found in combination with other rocks. Occasionally Epidote is found in more unusual and striking combinations for example with red feldspar in Dragonstone.

Epidote was only first recorded in 1801 and is a mineral that has not had a long association with humanity over the millennia. There are no myths and legends associated with this attractive crystal.
