Description

Where does this Blue Calcite Rough Specimen originate?

Calcite is a common mineral found all over the world. The clear optical crystal structure was originally found in Iceland hence its alternative name of ‘Iceland spar’. Blue Calcite is commonly mined in Mexico Madagascar, Spain and South Africa with other sources including the UK it is a rarer colour of Calcite.

What is Blue Calcite?

Calcite itself is one of the most varied and common minerals on earth.  It is a form of Calcium Carbonate and occurs in a wide variety of colours.  Calcite will often display a variety of fluorescing characteristics. These are fluorescence, phosphorescence, thermoluminescence, and even triboluminescence.  Most calcites are found in Limestone. In fact, the name calcite derives from the Greek word ‘chalix’ for lime.  The size of the calcite crystals is directly connected to the intensity of metamorphic activity that the limestone has undergone.

What are the myths and legends associated with this Blue Calcite Rough Specimen?

Blue Calcite is a relatively recent discovery so has no specific legends and mythology associated with.  The most obvious calcite legends relate to the Optical Calcite or ‘Iceland Spar’.  This was first recorded by J D Dana in 1837 but its historical use predates that by centuries.  Pliny the Eldar first named Calcite in AD 79.

The mineral is double refractive which means that when you look through the transparent crystal objects will appear to be in two places at the same time. This polarizing quality meant that Viking sailors could use it to reflect light even in cloudy weather and identify their location in relation to the sun. This ‘sunstone’ was part of the essential navigation toolkit used by Vikings to travel the oceans.

The theory is supported by archaeological evidence found in the shipwreck of the ‘Alderney’ which sank in 1592 and had Optical calcite in its contents. Researchers have established that it is possible to fix your location to within one degree accuracy.

Coloured calcites do have ancient provenance in jewellery and worship going back to antiquity in many cultures.

Interestingly almost all the Ancient Egyptian ‘alabaster’ carvings are in fact yellow calcite!
