Where does Moonstone originate?
Moonstone is a type of Feldspar that is mined on an artisanal basis rather than large scale commercial mining. Geologically it is formed from thin layers of stilbite and orthoclase which interlace in a lattice as the magma cools over time. The key to its formation is that the two materials cool at different rates with the Orthoclase solidifying more quickly. The still liquid stilbite forms microscopically thin layers between the orthoclase crystals. There is a lot that can go wrong in this complex process which is why Moonstone is uncommon.
This layering is the secret to the ‘adularescence’ of Moonstone. The two materials have different refractive indices which means that light is bent when a polished stone is moved in the light. In rare cases this can become chatoyance, display rainbows or a pointed star like shine.
