Why is Rhodochrosite called the Stone of the Compassionate Heart

Rhodochrosite is increasingly rare because the mines are drying up. It is getting harder and harder to find good examples of the qualities that we look for in Rhodochrosite. Sometimes known as ‘Inca Rose’ and located in Argentina/ Peru/USA/ South Africa and Romania.

In the background picture you might notice the 1950’s Rhodochrosite jewelry/trinket box which has a beautifully beveled lid and lovely velvet interior. It is superb quality and very rare. I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I found this at a Car Boot sale local to me for £4!! Thank you universe. With a retail value somewhere between £3500-£4500 the moral of this tale is that you might find your dream piece of Rhodochrosite where you least expect it …..if you keep your eyes open.

On the subject of value for money and buying from places like boot sales. There is real merit in looking for vintage crystal ornaments in the second hand market. Items which may currently seem out of fashion may contain wonderful specimen crystals that you want to use in your crystal work. Be cautious with bead purchases because many are treated, dyed or fake. They can be very difficult to distinguish even to a well trained eye. There is a very strong market in material intended to deceive. I plan to do a blog post later on all about the different treatments and enhancements and common fakes just to help prepare anyone who may be unfamiliar with these practices.

Although most Rhodochrosite comes in the pink to red colour range it can be yellowish, orange and even brown. It is easily confused with the manganese silicate Rhodonite but it is a softer material with white banding rather than the more black veins of manganese oxide present in Rhodonite.

Rhodochrosite symbolises selfless love. Sometimes called the Stone of the Compassionate Heart this moves beyond compassion and motivates one to act on others behalf. However self love is always the first step making it a great healing stone. It helps us with the inner child addressing old wounds and emotional trauma from the past. It can bringing reconciliation, forgiveness and joy. This stone helps creativity and the discovery of hidden talents. It encourages one to to take action and dispels anxiety and stress. An empowering crystal said to help motivate and enhance passion and sexuality. Good for meditation and healing the earth. Balances ‘Ying and Yang’. It has a truly gentle energy.
