What is prehnite?
Prehnite is a calcium aluminium silicate that is found in metamorphic rocks. It tends to form in association with calcites, zeolites and granites in cavities of volcanic rocks. Usually, it is a stalactite or botryoidal masses. Prehnite rarely crystallizes and when it does it can form as individual translucent crystals. Prehnite is mainly yellow to green in colouration. A deposit of orange Prehnite was found in South Africa which has now been mined out and has yet to be rediscovered anywhere else.
Prehnite is often found in combination with very dark epidote crystals as an overgrowth formed much later than the epidote. Liquid silica encased the pre-existing epidote and solidified as Prehnite around them.

Prehnite was found by Hendrik Von Prehn in the mid 18th century. He took the mineral back to the German mineralogist A Werner who ascertained that Prehnite was a new mineral in 1788. It was Werner that named the mineral Prehnite after Von Prehn who had recently died. This was the first time a mineral was named after its discoverer.
In South Africa there is a long indigenous tradition of Prehnite as a ‘Prophecy Stone’ and a useful tool to aid dreaming.
