What is Celestite?

Celestite is another name for the mineral Celestine which is a soft Strontium Sulfate mineral.  It forms in crystal forms which can be fibrous or massive and is commonly in sedimentary beds and associated with Gypsum, Anhydrite and Halite.  Celestite was formally identified and recorded by Werner Abraham in 1791.  Perhaps most fascinatingly of all it forms the skeletal make-up of the radiolarian protozoa Acantharea.  It is therefore an amazing part of biological life as well as being a stunning geological specimen. It is named from the Latin ‘caelestis0 or ‘celestial’ which is a reference to its sky like typical pale blue crystal form.  The crystals are translucent with a shiny lustre caused by gold within the matrix.
