Where does this Sphalerite with Calcite and Pyrite Specimen originate?
This is another special collectors’ specimen. Sphalerite can produce such widely varying forms and crystal combinations it is always a lovely thing to collect, and this is a very pretty piece. Some really nice calcite needle like crystals overgrowing the sphalerite with chunky pyrite inclusions as well. A lot of Sphalerite combinations come out of Eastern Europe, and this is an exceptionally good one. Although Sphalerite is not a rare mineral the good crystal forms are not as widely found. the best examples come from Eastern Europe, Mexico, Peru, England and the USA.
This interesting specimen originated in Bulgaria.
What is Sphalerite with Calcite and Pyrite?
Sphalerite is another sulfide mineral which is the main source of Zinc. The name ‘sphalerite’ comes from the Greek word for ‘treacherous’ as the usually grey sphalerite was routinely mistaken for Galena but when smelted yielded no lead at all. It is commonly associated with a range of minerals including pyrite, galena, smithsonite, calcite and dolomite. Crystals tend to be isometric and can be coloured from yellow to dark brown, orange, red, colourless, light blue and green.
Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral that presents as a brassy ‘fool’s gold’ appearance. It is commercially mined across the globe but has also been valued for millennia because of its attractive luster.
Calcite is one of the most varied and common minerals on earth. It is a form of Calcium Carbonate and occurs in a wide variety of colours. Calcite will often display a variety of fluorescing characteristics. These are fluorescence, phosphorescence, thermoluminescence, and even triboluminescence. Sphalerite was only discovered in 1847 by German geologist Ernst Friedrich Glocker it does not have any ancient legends connected to it however some of the materials found with it do have long traditions going bake millennia.
The most obvious legends relate to the Optical Calcite or ‘Iceland Spar’. This was first recorded by J D Dana in 1837 but its historical use predates that by centuries. Pliny the Eldar first named Calcite in AD 79.
The mineral is double refractive which means that when you look through the transparent crystal objects will appear to be in two places at the same time. This polarizing quality meant that Viking sailors could use it to reflect light even in cloudy weather and identify their location in relation to the sun. This ‘sunstone’ was part of the essential navigation toolkit used by Vikings to travel the oceans.
The theory is supported by archaeological evidence found in the shipwreck of the ‘Alderney’ which sank in 1592 and had Optical calcite in its contents. Researchers have established that it is possible to fix your location to within one degree accuracy.

Pyrite also has a longstanding connection to ancient civilisation. Polished pyrite mirrors have been found linked to Mesoamerican burials in Mayan and Atec settlements. The Roman Pliny ‘the elder’ recorded its properties for creating a spark when struck with iron. The generic term ‘pyr’ was given to a range of minerals that created a spark of fire when struck.
