In Latin the word ‘carnis’ means ‘flesh’ which describes the colour of the stone. The Egyptians believed that Carnelian could help the soul on its journey to the after life and that it holds great protective power. They wore it to calm jealousy, anger and envy. It is able to cleanse other stones and is a great stone for fostering an acceptance of the cycle of life.
Ancient Warriors wore Carnelian around their neck for courage and physical power to conquer their enemies. Egyptian master architects wore Carnelian to show their rank of builder, and alchemists of the Middle Ages used it as a boiling stone to activate the energy of other Chalcedonies. As the first stone in the breastplate of the High Priest, it signified the blood of the martyrs.

Deep red Carnelian may be heat treated. If you hold it against the light treated Carnelian will shows stripes while natural Carnelian shows a cloudy colour.
