The name is derived from the Latin ‘carnis’ meanin flesh.  Deep red Carnelian may be heat treatedand, held against light shows stripes while natural Carnelian shows a cloudy colour.  Believed by Egyptians to help the soul on its journey to the after life and to hold great protective power.  They wore it to calm jealousy, anger and envy.  It also able to cleanse other stones and is a great stone for fostering an acceptance of the cycle of life.

Ancient Warriors wore Carnelian around their neck for courage and physical power to conquer their enemies. In Egypt it was worn by master architects to show their rank of builder, and alchemists of the Middle Ages used it as a boiling stone to activate the energy of other Chalcedonies.
