These Petoskey Stone Tumblestones are a rock and a fossil. In nature they are found often pebble-shaped and composed of a fossilized rugose coral called Hexagonaria percarinata. This fossil is distinct in that the “eye” of each coral is darker than the stone surrounding it. It is found along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the United States.

Petoskey Stone was found and sold as a souvenir from the Petoskey area in Michigan. The name Petoskey appears to have originated late in the 18th century. Its roots stem from an Ottawa Indian legend. In 1965, Petoskey stone was named the state stone of Michigan.
