Description
Moonstone is a beautiful and mystical form of feldspar with a pearly and opalescent schiller. Moonstone is composed of the feldspar species, orthoclase and albite. After the two species are intermingled the newly formed mineral cools and the two species separate into layers. When light falls between these thin, flat layers, it scatters in many directions producing the phenomenon called adularescence, named after ‘adularia’, the historical name once used to refer to moonstone.
The rarest forms of Moonstone have a blue or irisdescent flash. Labradorite is the most well known type of ‘flashy’ feldspar but it is also common in Moonstone. In fact Rainbow Moonstone is sometimes called ‘White Labradorite’. The surprising multicoloured rainbow flash that giives these fabulous spheres there name is the most unusual and desirable for of the crystal.
